This morning.

You called this morning.

Said you were sorry.

Apologised wholeheartedly.

Asked me out.

Wanted to make amends.

Treat me “right”.

Assured me you weren’t an asshole.

So I smiled and hung up.

And I waited.

All night.

For a phone call.

That never came.

  1. That’s really good. The way the viewpoint person seemed to almost want a callback but hung up as if wanting to get rid of the caller brings a nice dissonance to the reader.
It’s as if the viewpoint character is saying, “See, he/she didn’t call back. That proves that the apology was meaningless.”
Very thought provoking and unsettling. Nice!
